Your pantry is one of, if not the most, utlised area of the home so it makes sense that it needs to be functional and well organised given hands big and small are rummaging through the food all day. With that being said I’m going to give you my secret recipe for creating your very own pantry magic!
My 7 step action plan:
1. Make sure you have a large clear space to work with – the kitchen table or bench-top work perfectly
2. Remove everything from the pantry, disposing of expired food and give all of the shelves a good clean.
3. Sort your food into categories such as: pasta + rice, dry goods, spices, snacks, cans + jars, recipe bases, baking supplies etc.
4. Paper, and unnecessary clutter that doesn’t serve a purpose in your pantry can be placed into categories away from your working zone (keep, donate, re-home, bin) to deal with at the end.
5. Assess what you have left and what storage supplies you may need. Consider air tight containers, storage baskets, tiered shelving and labels.
6. Go shopping – woohoo
7. Built it back up again.
THE PANTRY SET UP
Now that you have a nice blank canvas it’s easier to work out a more effective way to set up your pantry. You want to use the middle shelves for the most utilised items as they’re easier to access and will make it more manageable to put things back when you’re done.
AIR TIGHT PANTRY CONTAINERS
The top of the shelf can really hard to get to or even see so consider placing things like cookbooks, alcohol, lollies and party supplies up there

Storing items in categories with clear labels will help you keep your pantry tidy, as everything has a designated clearly labelled home.

CLEARLY LABELLED PANTRY CATEGORIES
I’m a huge fan of installing tiered shelving to stack cans and jars so it’s easier to see what you have and maximises height and depth within the pantry.
TIERED SHELVING
The bottom shelves in your pantry are easier to access than the top and I like to store things like excess food supplies, appliances or snacks, fruit + veg for little ones to access easily. I recommend removing snacks from boxes so that you can easily see stock levels and the kids can pack their own lunch boxes. I also suggest having 2-3 additional air tight containers spare so you can store open biscuits etc.
Fruit and veg storage idea
Paper clutter in the pantry can be a problem, I’m a huge fan of installing a life admin command centre to store incoming letters, invitations, school forms, bills and anything you need to deal with in one place, that’s not the fridge, so when you’re looking for something important you’ll locate it with ease.
LIFE ADMIN COMMAND CENTRE
